Floyd Bennett Field is one of New York City’s greatest treasures.
Once the site of record-breaking flights by aviation pioneers like Amelia Earhart, Roscoe Turner, and Howard Hughes, Floyd Bennett Field at the edge of Brooklyn is now part of Gateway National Recreation Area, a vast urban park within the National Park system.
Here, you can explore more than 1,300 acres of open space, shoreline, and nature. Whether you want to marvel at migratory birds on the Atlantic Flyway, admire vintage aircraft or explore acres of coastal forest, Floyd Bennett Field invites you to discover a different side of New York.
The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and the National Park Service are coming together to revitalize Floyd Bennett Field’s historic Hangars 3 & 4, and surrounding green space—investing in infrastructure and unlocking possibilities found nowhere else in New York.

We’re ready to unlock Floyd Bennett Field’s full potential—and its historic hangars are the key.
Once home to planes and pilots, Hangars 3 & 4 will soon welcome New Yorkers to nature. The adaptive reuse of these historic hangars will create space for community gathering, arts and culture, and new ways to experience Jamaica Bay.
Upon completion, they‘ll be be open to the public for the first time in their nearly 100-year history—and you can help.
HANGAR 3: CULTURE, COMMUNITY & MORE
Hangar 3 will be fit out for arts & cultural performances, diverse public programming, and new visitor amenities, including:
Flexible event space
Hands-on family and educational offerings
Food & beverage options
New rooftop terrace overlooking the Bay and the New York skyline
Bike rentals and an in-park shuttle
Public programming to complement interpretive displays in the Ryan Visitor Center and the historic aircraft collection at Hangar B
Activating the public plaza and Hangar Lawn with year-round programming like our Public Arts Festival, Run the Runways, Park Pals and more.
HANGAR 4: ENVIRONMENTAL ENGAGEMENT
In partnership with the City University of New York (CUNY) and CUNY-wide institute, the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay, Hangar 4 will become a hub for science and conservation, featuring:
Laboratory and technical spaces, including computer modeling to advance and accelerate nature-based solutions at scale
An active program of research and field-based pilots that will leverage the 28,000 acres of diverse ecosystem typologies in Jamaica Bay: open water and shorelines, wetlands and grasslands, maritime scrub and forest, and vast open sky.
Development of restoration and resilience techniques and applications for Jamaica Bay that can be scaled for other urban estuaries around the world
The nucleus for our workforce development programming, expanding our work to teach new skills and offer resources for young adults.
