World Fish Migration Day Seining at Shirley Chisholm State Park
Help us catch, count, and record fish species and wildlife that thrive along the shores of the Penn Water Access Area!
Join the Education Team on Saturday, May 30th from 10am to 12pm for a morning of seining! Together we'll discover the incredible wildlife that call these shores home.
This program is free! All supplies are provided.
All ages are welcome. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
This program is fully outdoors. Please wear shoes you don't mind getting wet or muddy.
We will meet at the Penn Water Access Area. Note: The PWAA is roughly a 10 minute walk from the parking lot along a flat, gravel trail.
Don't forget to pack water, sun screen, and whatever else you need to be comfortable outside on the trails.
Turtle Count Community Science Program at Marine Park
Join Marine Park Alliance to learn how you can use binoculars to help out with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s volunteer diamondback terrapin headcount surveys.
Trees Count at Rockaway Community Park with the Urban Park Rangers
Volunteer with NYC Parks for Trees Count 2025! At each event you will receive a tote bag with all the materials needed to count trees.
Next, we'll provide a 30-minute training session that includes the basics of tree identification and how to measure and assess each tree. Using our Tree Census app, you’ll split up into different zones within the park to start counting trees!
After completing your first training event, you are welcome to continue counting trees on your own in smaller parks across the city. Registration is required. Registration begins on May 14.

Marine Park South Shoreline Cleanup
Join Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and Marine Park Alliance for a cleanup at Marine Park! We will come together to help preserve the health and beauty of the largest city park in Brooklyn. Volunteers will remove marine-bound debris from the park, shoreline, and surrounding trails. Marine Park is a haven for various bird species, including migratory waterfowl, songbirds, and raptors. Our work will help to protect this ecologically diverse and critically important protected area.
Volunteers will meet across from 3064 Gerritsen Avenue, near the south shoreline of Marine Park.

NYC Parks Cleanup: It's My Park at Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk
This “It's My Park” season, volunteer with Belle Harbor Property Owners Association for a beach clean up at Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk.
Meet by the sea wall on Beach 134 Street. Volunteers will disperse to preferred blocks within Beach 130-B141. Cleanup materials will be provided.
City Nature Challenge BioBlitz with JBRPC and the National Park Service
Join Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and the National Park Service for a BioBlitz at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge as part of the global City Nature Challenge!
During this hands-on community science event, participants will work together to document as many plant and animal species as possible throughout the refuge. Using the iNaturalist app, you’ll help photograph and record wildlife - contributing valuable data that helps scientists and conservationists better understand urban biodiversity.
Please bring a smartphone or tablet with the iNaturalist app downloaded, or, if you’re new to the app, we can help you download it and learn how to use it at the event. Drop by between 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. - all experience levels are welcome, whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or just curious about the wildlife around you. Come explore the incredible biodiversity of Jamaica Bay and be part of a global effort to document nature in our cities!

Pollinator Garden Planting Day with the National Park Service
Support your local national park by helping plant native species and expand pollinator habitats at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge! Volunteers will also have the opportunity to sign up for future maintenance days and continue caring for the garden. This is a great opportunity to learn about native plants and pollinator ecology.
Gardening tools and supplies will be provided. Be sure to bring water and dress comfortably in clothes you do not mind getting dirty. All volunteers under 18 must be accompanied with an adult for the entire event.
Earth Day Shoreline Cleanup and Art in the Park
Join New York State Parks staff to clean debris off the shoreline at the Penn Water Access Area and creating collages on the theme of climate futures. All are welcome to participate in both activities, or just one.
All materials for the cleanup, including hand sanitizer, gloves, and garbage pickers are provided. Please dress for the weather and wear shoes you don't mind getting muddy!
Materials for collaging are also provided, but you are welcome to bring your own materials, too.
Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
The Penn Water Access Area is about 0.25 miles, or a 5-10 minute walk, from the Penn Parking Lot.
North Channel Bridge Beach Cleanup with Sadhana
Join the National Park Service and Sadhana, for the monthly beach cleanup series, Project Prithvi!
Become a steward for your park and help make Jamaica Bay a better place for all of us this year. Gloves, garbage bags, and pickers will be provided.
Meet at the red brick pavilion in North Channel parking lot, south of Joseph P. Addabbo Memorial Bridge (Cross Bay Blvd North Channel Bridge) on west side of Cross Bay Blvd. There is overflow parking in the lot across the street as well.
Dress appropriately for weather and conditions - hats, sunglasses, sturdy footwear, and sunscreen are recommended. Thunderstorms or heavy rains cancel. For more information, call the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at (718) 318-4340.
Plumb Beach Spring Cleanup & Birding
Join the Brooklyn Bird Club for a birding and shoreline cleanup event at Plumb Beach, supported by the Jamaica Bay–Rockaway Parks Conservancy.
We’ll focus on removing debris from the beach and surrounding areas; cleanup tools will be provided. Bring sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate layers, and—if you have them—binoculars and keen eyes for spotting both birds and trash.
Brooklyn Bird Club members will be attending to help with bird spotting and identification throughout the morning, though the primary focus of the event will be the cleanup rather than a formal birding walk.

Transportation: If you don’t have a car but would like to attend, Brooklyn Bird Club will coordinate carpools once registration closes. Please indicate if you need or can offer a ride when you sign up.

Attendance is capped at 30 participants.

November CleanSweep: Rockaway Community Park
As the winter months progress, the prevailing winds and tides bring major debris into Jamaica Bay. Join Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) for the November CleanSweep, an effort by volunteers and students to remove marine debris from our shoreline! Enjoy the beautiful fall weather and end the year with the gift of clean shorelines!
Gloves, bags, and tools will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy, closed-toe shoes, and bring their own water and sunscreen. The event is rain or shine.

International Coastal Cleanup Day at Dubos Point Wildlife Sanctuary
In honor of International Coastal Cleanup Day, join Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy for a cleanup at Dubos Point Wildlife Sanctuary!
Volunteers will meet near the public restrooms to help remove trash and debris from Dubos Point’s important shorelines and wetlands while enjoying incredible views of Jamaica Bay!

Global Citizen Clean Up
Join the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, in partnership with Global Citizen and supported by Goodera, alongside the Black Surfing Association East Coast Chapter, for a shoreline cleanup at Gateway National Recreation Area’s Canarsie Pier. Participants can earn free tickets to the Global Citizen Festival on September 27th by helping to remove trash and marine debris from the shores, contributing to a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient Jamaica Bay for wildlife and future generations. Together, we’ll uplift community stewardship and demonstrate the power of local action to drive meaningful environmental change and defend the planet.

Join Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy for Rockaway Refresh: Flow & Clean, a mindful start to your Monday afternoon that gives back to the beach! We'll kick things off with Refresh Yoga, a short 10-15 minute session of gentle, grounding movement—then head to the sand to clean up the shoreline at Beach 106th Street.
These pop-up beach cleanups happen every Monday from 1–4 PM all summer long. Help us keep Rockaway beautiful after busy weekends.
